Chile’s President Michelle Bachelet announced Tuesday that the country will send $1.9 billion in aid to help fight the global opioid crisis.
Bachelet also announced that the government is planning to spend $1 billion on drug rehabilitation and testing programs.
The U.N. health agency estimates that nearly 2.7 million people died of drug overdoses in 2016, more than in any year since records began in the 1990s.
